A little known land formerly part of the Yugoslav federation was the sole republic to emerge unscathed without war or ethnic cleansing. Although small in size and with a population of around 2 million, it manages to encompass some of the best scenery of Europe. Known as the "green piece of Europe" it comprises high alpine peaks, stunning lakes, historic towns, vast caves , scenic woodlands and even some coastline.
The symbol of the nation is the majestic Mt Triglav , the triple headed peak and center of the Triglav National park consisting of the high Julian Alps and the Lakes of Bohinj and Bled. In the east are the towering Karavanke mountains, to the south is the charming capital of Ljubljana, often called "little Prague". In the west is the "Karst " region comprising staggering caves systems, itinerant lakes and sinkholes.
Lake Bled
The charming spa town, now frequented by foreign tourists, sits adjacent to the stunning Lake Bled. Heated by thermal springs, it is warm enough for swimming in summer yet manages to freeze over in winter. In the center of the lake is the island with its lonely church and off to the east on a high promontory is the Bled castle.

Soca front, Triglav park:
In 1917 , over a million lives were lost in the ill fated Soca front when the Italians were annihilated by the smaller German forces. Vast ruins remain including bunkers, command centers, walls, trenches, and deep pits. Also there are large remnants of the barbed wire defenses from the war, plus bayonets, hand grenades and other relics on display at the nearby mountain hut.
Ljubljana:
The charming capital city with its cobblestone streets, high above castle and dramatic views of the Alps is centered around its scenic river and amazing diversity of different styles of architecture. It is also a very laid back city perfect for a days exploration.
Predjama castle
This amazing fortress built literally into a large cave mouth and later added to perfect the imposing facade is among the most stunning buildings in Europe. Famous for its "robin hood" figure 'Erasmus'; who robbed the rich and gave to the poor and was laid siege to for a year by the Austrians but died infamously on his toilet!
